Statistics Matter

Dear President-Elect Trump:

Tomorrow is your real election day.  The American people voted six weeks ago, and it was an election that you lost.  However, in the election of U.S. Presidents, the popular vote of the people is merely a statistic, like rushing yards in a football game.  Ultimately, the score is only what matters and statistics like rushing yards are irrelevant to the outcome.

November 6th was just an exit poll for the real election that will take place tomorrow in fifty sovereign capitals of our republic.  Based on what we learned on that date in the popular vote, no one expects you to lose tomorrow.

Many criticize the electoral college as outdated and undemocratic.  I am not one of them.  The electoral college is an essential fixture in our system that helps us remain free.  I applaud the electoral college, and I congratulate you, in advance, of your win.

But, moving forward with your presidency, I urge you to focus on more than just the final score of tomorrow’s contest.  You should pay close attention to the rushing yardage of the election—the popular vote.

It is just a statistic.  But it’s a statistic that matters.

Sincerely,

davids-sig
